City of Vancouver Environmental Education Specialist
 
 
 
The AmeriCorps member will serve as an Environmental Education Specialist for 40 hours per week. The member will take the lead (with support from college interns and involvement of our education staff) in developing and delivering programming for monthly Second Saturday events for multi-generational families. In coordination with the Education team, the member will also develop and implement additional ongoing or new outreach events for multi-generational audiences that are offered on-site at the Water Center as well as off-site in the community. Examples include Columbia River Watershed Festival, Old Apple Tree Festival, Green Schools Summit, World Water Day, Arbor Day, Critter Count, Earth Day, Get Outdoors Day, and Science in the Park. The member will take an active role in developing and delivering on-site field trip programs to K-12 students throughout the academic year and summer months, and assist watershed monitoring educators with school and field site visits focused on water quality. The member will support the coordination and implementation of stewardship/service learning events including: beach clean-ups, wetlands restoration, garden clean-up and plantings. Additionally, opportunities for engaging with exhibit research and development will be available. The member will be focused on delivering high quality environmental education programming that is inclusive of all members of the community. This position is contingent on funding. Member Duties : Plan and deliver educational events including: monthly 2-hour Second Saturday programs; 6 to 8 additional outreach events over the service term; teach, support, and assist with on-site student field trips for K-12 students; and delivery of community stewardship/service learning events. For all events and programs the member will develop/refine themes; publicize events, clarify messages and outcomes, research/develop hands-on activities and curriculum, arrange logistics, obtain supplies, schedule volunteers/interns, coordinate with partners. Additional duties include: Interpretation for walk-in visitors using the knowledge and teaching skills developed during the service term; support for teacher workshops; research for exhibit development.
