CWS AmeriCorps – Calaveras County H&HS

PROBLEM: Many in our communities were raised in stable environments by nurturing parents, but far too many experienced just the opposite. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 1 in 4 children experience some form of child abuse and neglect (2014). The consequences go far beyond bruises and constant hunger. Chronic exposure to stress, such as that caused by child abuse, is harmful on brain circuits that are malleable during early childhood, increasing mental/physical health problems (CDC 2009). The consequences are lifelong, impacting health, economic potential, and social wellbeing into adulthood (CDC 2016). INTERVENTION: Child abuse and neglect is not inevitable; we can do better for our children. It is not about placing more children in foster homes or allocating more money to the problem. It is about engaging parents, the most common abusers, in highly effective evidence-based family stabilization supports and parenting education. GOAL: Together, Prevent Child Abuse California, AmeriCorps, and our Partner Agencies like Calaveras County Child Welfare Services have demonstrated that when we intervene with high risk parents we ensure their children are safe, stable, nurtured, and live up to the potential with which every child is born. The ideal outcome is that families avoid entry/re-entry into the Child Welfare System. If offered the position and clear a background check, applicants will sign a MEMBER CONTRACT to serve 11/1/17(or later)-9/15/18. Members will serve an average of 23-27 hours per week and will receive a living allowance pay check in the amount of $450-525 per pay period (two pay periods in a month). Upon successful completion of service, the member receives an Education Award = $2,907. Being selected for additional terms of service to start on 9/16/18 (or later) is possible. Individuals can do up to 4 terms of service (can be consecutive, but doesn’t have to be) and can receive up to 2 full-time Education Awards.
