Statewide Vulnerable Populations Preparedness VISTA
 
 
 
This position joins the Oregon Health Authority’s statewide VISTA team. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year, team retreats and meetings, and the support of the team leaders and project director based at the state public health agency. The Oregon Public Health Division works to protect and promote the health of all Oregonians and the places we live, work, play and learn. The Oregon public health system includes federal, state and local agencies, private organizations and other diverse partners working together to put healthy options and health-promoting services within reach for everyone in Oregon. Oregon needs a strong public health system to achieve better health and better care at lower costs. Public health plays in important role in Oregon’s health system transformation. This VISTA position is with the Health Security, Preparedness and Response Program. The mission of the HSPR Program is to develop public health systems to prepare for and respond to major and acute threats and emergencies that impact the health of people in Oregon. We collaborate with Oregon Emergency Management (OEM) and our local, regional and national Emergency Management partners. This position is located in Portland, which is Oregon’s cultural center, dense with independent movie theaters and art galleries. The exceptional public transit system makes it easy to get around the city without a car, no matter if you’re visiting a food cart pod or a public park. With the innovative public health work happening in Oregon, Portland is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health.

Member Duties : This VISTA position is a part of a new health equity initiative to expand the low-income and vulnerable populations preparedness planning and response efforts at a statewide level. The VISTA will conduct an assessment of local public health and other agencies that represent economically disadvantaged individuals engagement of low income communities in emergency preparedness planning and response efforts to identify gaps and promising practices. They will develop components that address low income peoples’ needs that can be inserted into a range of exercises, as part of annual public health and medical preparedness exercises. The VISTA will develop a training curriculum that is specific to Oregon’s demographics, to address the functional needs of at-risk and low income populations before, during and after a disaster response. And finally, the VISTA will support integration of state public health access and functional needs of at-risk populations into preparedness and response plans.
