Opportunity Council - WFCN - Opportunity Neighborhoods VISTA

WFCN builds the capacity of communities and organizations in Whatcom County to support children, youth and families so that they can develop the skills and opportunities they need to lead healthy productive lives. WFCN aims to prevent child abuse and neglect, youth substance abuse and violence, and to support school success through community change and capacity building efforts. This project aims to build community capacity and resilience in three opportunity neighborhoods where each neighborhood is unique, but shares conditions of high poverty, racial or cultural diversity, and need to build social connections to increase community wellbeing and hope. In all neighborhoods, the VISTA program will aim to apply a strengths-based framework to further grow social bonds and identify assets and resources available to the communities through their residents, businesses and social services providers. The VISTA participates in and develops new community collaborations with government, social services, business and volunteer sectors. Ultimately the purpose is to build hope so that individuals, families and communities thrive in settings where social and economic opportunities and skills allow all to reach their chosen human potentials and to reduce or eliminate exposure to childhood trauma/adverse experiences.
