Lines for Life Communications VISTA

This position joins the Oregon Health Authority’s statewide VISTA team. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year, team retreats and meetings, and the support of the team leaders and project director based at the state public health agency. For more information about the Oregon Health Authority VISTA Partnership Program, please visit: http://go.usa.gov/39Vd5. Lines for Life is a regional non-profit dedicated to preventing substance abuse and suicide. We offer help and hope to individuals and communities, and promote mental health for all. Our work addresses a spectrum of needs that include intervention, prevention, and advocacy. We educate, train, and advocate to prevent issues of substance abuse, mental illness, and thoughts of suicide from reaching crisis levels. But when a crisis arises or support is needed, we’re available 24/7/365 to intervene with personalized help. Community members who struggle with mental health issues and substance abuse experience increased barriers to moving out of poverty. Wrestling with mental health and substance abuse issues can reduce an individual's ability to care for other aspects of life such as maintaining stable employment and housing. This VISTA project will enhance communication with individuals and communities in poverty to encourage the self-care, help seeking behavior, and the support systems that are known to improve mental health. This position is located in Portland, which is Oregon’s cultural center, dense with independent movie theaters and art galleries. The exceptional public transit system makes it easy to get around the city without a car, no matter if you’re visiting a food cart pod or a public park. With the innovative public health work happening in Oregon, Portland is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health.
