Oregon Pediatric Society Program Development VISTA

This position joins the Oregon Health Authority’s statewide VISTA team. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year, team retreats and meetings, and the support of the team leaders and project director based at the state public health agency. For more information about the Oregon Health Authority VISTA Partnership Program, please visit: http://go.usa.gov/cnayh. The Oregon Pediatric Society (OPS) is the state chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). We are part of the largest child health network in the country. For example, it was an AAP member, with help from the state AAP chapter and national organization, who exposed the Flint, Michigan public-water crisis. Pediatricians are in a unique position to monitor and influence a child’s health and family practices because of their trusted expertise and caring relationships built over time. At least 90% of US children are currently covered through health insurance, and there are very high attendance rates at frequent well-child visits across all racial and income groups. OPS trains child health providers and clinic staff statewide on behavioral and developmental health screenings, and how to connect to local and state resources. The AAP’s Statement on Poverty and Oregon’s new Medicaid metric on screening for childhood obesity are foundational for OPS’ plan to add more information about the social determinants of health to our existing quality improvement programs. We have a small staff, so to achieve these important goals, OPS welcomes your help! Portland is unique. It is one of the best public transit cities in the country, and celebrates books, outdoor recreation, coffee, craft beer, rain, and food carts. With Oregon’s national leadership in healthcare transformation, Portland is a wonderful place for exploring a future in public health.
