BMVP - Increasing Academic Engagement through Mentoring

The Billings Community Foundation is a non-profit, tax-exempt, innovative community foundation governed by local citizens promoting philanthropy and charitable giving. In 2015 local schools had a 53% retention rate for full time students, more than 25% lower than the national average, and only 27% of First Time students graduated after 6 years according to the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES). Local students are not achieving the US National Average Retention Rate. With a 40% low-income population based on college portraits, only slightly below the national average according to NCES, local students are missing an integral piece of engagement that encourages continued enrollment. Mentors can prepare their mentees for professional careers and assist with their workplace skills by: helping set career goals and taking the steps to realize them; using personal contacts to help young people network with industry professionals, find internships, and locate possible jobs; introduce young people to resources and organizations they may not be familiar with; and help them develop skills for seeking a job, interviewing for a job, and keeping a job. The goal of this project is to increase academic engagement and retention rates for low-income first generation college students through mentoring connections facilitated via the Billings Community Foundation. This project will eliminate the cycle of poverty for low income college freshmen as mentoring results in school performance, attendance, engagement, and graduation rates. The mentoring relationships built through this project will give first generation, low income, college freshman the opportunity to have consistent, positive role models who will reinforce the knowledge that these students can be vital, contributing community members.
