BVMP - Head Start Explorer's Academy - Family Engagement

Explorers Academy is a Head Start program required to serve low income families with young children aged 3-5. The impacts of poverty on preschool-aged children can have lasting consequences for academic and developmental outcomes; research shows that one of the most important contributors to a child’s school readiness and lifelong success is parent engagement in a child’s learning. This project aims to address a need for meaningful parent engagement among all the families served by Explorers Academy, both in school and at home. Engaged parents and strong families play a critical role in helping their children to prepare for school and achieve lifelong success. Children whose learning is intentionally supported in home environments demonstrate improved literacy skills, better peer interactions, fewer behavior problems, and more motivation and persistence during learning activities. Longitudinal studies of low-income children show that high family involvement offsets the risks of children growing up in low-income households and in households with low parent education. Parent volunteerism is another critical component of supporting education for young children, especially in Head Start programs – the positive contact with program staff helps to build trust necessary for Family Advocates and other staff to best serve and support families. This project will alleviate poverty by helping to strengthen family bonds and improve parent engagement with their children’s learning, helping to provide the foundation and improve the skills children need to rise from poverty and achieve lifelong success.

Member Duties : Enhance the social and cognitive development of low income children by increasing parental engagement and help them develop the readiness and skills for maximum school success! The overall goal of the project is to achieve success in a school-readiness education program by improving outreach to low income areas and increasing parental engagement in children’s learning at Explorers Academy. This project will assist in creating long-term sustainability by building agency capacity to better understand the needs and motivations of parents, knit together efforts across the agency into a focused initiative, and provide relevant training to staff. In order to achieve success the VISTA member will: Create a new parent volunteer recruitment plan to support classroom and at-home learning; develop a strategic outreach plan to increase parent communication; and develop outreach materials for use by program staff to educate parents on the importance of supporting learning at home.
