Austin-Literacy First UTexas
Literacy First is a high quality, comprehensive, research-based, English and Spanish literacy tutoring program that supports students in the Austin community. Our mission is to provide low-income schools with highly trained AmeriCorps tutors to ensure that children advance to grade level in reading before third grade. Literacy First members tutor kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students one-on-one daily. The children we work with typically arrive at school without the background and skills that are critical for learning to read, and are likely to fall behind without additional support. During the 2016-17 school year, 75% of students in our program either fully reached or made measurable progress toward reading at grade level. Literacy First hires both English and Bilingual tutors. Bilingual Tutors work with students whose first language is Spanish and will conduct lessons in Spanish. Serving as a Bilingual Tutor requires basic Spanish proficiency and affords a great opportunity to advance your language skills. Literacy First supports Bilingual tutors by providing scripted lessons. Literacy First tutors receive a well-rounded service experience. They are given the opportunity to have a meaningful year of service in low-income schools, commit to civic engagement through community service projects, and have the option to participate in professional development activities such as blog writing, social media, service event coordinating, and recruitment opportunities. Members interested in a career in education are also given the option to serve a second year with Literacy First and pursue alternative teaching certification through Literacy First’s partnership with Region 13. Region 13 waives the application and registration fee for second year members along with additional incentives and grants for Bilingual members.

Member Duties : Full-Time members serve a total of 45 hours each week. Members tutor in their assigned school 40 hours a week, Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Members attend team meetings on campus, compile student data, and share this information with school teachers and adminstrators. Members also serve an additional 5 hours per week by partnering with a local community organization or program. Community partnerships allow members to develop relationships and skills while connecting to the greater Austin community. Service with Literacy First requires a strong work ethic, flexibility, and the commitment to becoming an early literacy expert. No prior teaching experience is required. Literacy First supports tutors with comprehensive training, weekly on-site coaching, and bilingual support if needed.
