Open Door - Student and Volunteer Outreach (MLC)

The Minnesota Literacy Council is a leader in Adult Basic Education. At our six adult learning centers, we provide over 240,000 hours of instruction annually. Although the VISTA member’s work will ultimately be utilized at all 6 Open Door Learning Centers, they will primarily work at Open Door Learning Center-Northeast in Minneapolis, which serves adults seeking English and computer skills. Most students are immigrants and refugees and qualify as low income by federal guidelines. The center and surrounding community are richly diverse; our learning center serves students from 39 countries. The majority of learners are between ages 25-44. Recruitment and retention of new students and volunteers ebbs and flows despite consistent staff effort. Currently over 33% of learners who enroll at our learning center attend less than twelve hours of programming. This year, student contact hours at our learning centers have decreased by 8%. This is a result of site moves and the decrease in refugee arrivals. As a response, we aim to increase, retain, and support student contact hours at all sites through outreach and retention strategies. The VISTA will refine a comprehensive outreach plan for recruiting new learners and volunteers for Open Door Learning Center sites, and will analyze program trends to help us develop and implement tools to move us to the next level of retention and recruitment. The VISTA will serve as a member of our Diversity and Inclusion committee and help us consider how all levels of our organization can reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. As a result of the VISTA’s work, we will serve more adult learners in the Twin Cities and build our capacity to create pathways to opportunities within our organization for learners we serve. Additionally, our VISTA position is part of MN Literacy Council AmeriCorps VISTA cohort. Applications reviewed on rolling basis through May 31 www.mnliteracy.org/americorps-vista
