Oklahoma Literacy Coalition VISTA Project

From Blake Shelton to the Flaming Lips, Oklahoma culture and communities are as diverse as its terrain. Spend the weekend rock climbing, spying on buffalo, and eating longhorn burgers, or attend a music festival, peruse one of our many museums, and dine on haute cuisine. Oklahomans like to play as hard as we work! Unfortunately, not all Oklahomans are capable of engaging in all this great state has to offer. Oklahoma ranks 42nd in the nation in overall poverty, and one out of eight adult Oklahomans read at or below basic reading levels. Since our inception in 1986, the Oklahoma Literacy Coalition (OLC) focus has been to help eradicate adult illiteracy by supporting literacy efforts statewide. The OLC has an extensive history of working with community-based literacy programs, state agencies, universities, libraries, correctional facilities, and the business community throughout the state. By drawing our resources together, we have created an anchor for adult literacy in Oklahoma. In doing so, we have strengthened communities through education, by empowering adults to earn higher incomes, become U.S. citizens, and lessen their chances of recidivism. Literacy programs throughout the state have communicated a problem with a lack of funding, volunteers, social media proficiency, and community exposure. As an OLC VISTA, you can help alleviate these problems and increase program capacity. Through awareness, fundraising, and community outreach activities, your service will benefit hundreds of the unemployed, working poor, those seeking high school equivalency diplomas, immigrants, and adult English as a Second Language learners in Oklahoma. In return, you will learn marketable skills, build your resume, and receive opportunities for personal and professional development. We are seeking bright, motivated, compassionate individuals who are ready to help break the cycles of poverty and illiteracy that plague our state. Contact: laura@okliteracy.org
