Service Year NC VISTA - Institute for Emerging Issues

The Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI) at NC State University works to ensure the economic prosperity of North Carolina. We believe that today's complex challenges require citizens who can work together by identifying shared interests and, then, act collaboratively to achieve common goals. We work at a statewide level, but our statewide efforts, by their very nature, benefit from and inform local work. When people are working with people they know, and on problems that are real to them, they are more invested in the work and better appreciate their own agency in finding opportunities for action. We want you to gain as much as you can throughout your VISTA year. You will have the chance to learn from and network with experts across the state. Located in the Research Triangle, one of the top 10 places to live according to US News and World Report, IEI is close to everything that makes this area ‘cool.’ Check out the award-winning Hunt Library (yes, that’s our building), join in the ACC basketball rivalry, and partake in the music, art, and innovation that has made this area famous. We are looking for a go-getter. Someone who is highly organized and not afraid to jump into the work and learn while doing. The position will require outreach to partners across the state, so we are looking for someone who likes making connections and feels comfortable working with lots of different kinds of people from K-12 school superintendents and town managers to high school students.

Member Duties : The VISTA will contribute to two IEI initiatives to support low-income communities across North Carolina: Text, Talk, Future (TTF) and ReCONNECT NC. TTF aims to improve post-secondary educational attainment levels in North Carolina. At its center is a texting-based program to encourage peer conversation around college and career readiness to high school students talking about their career options after graduation. The VISTA will build new partnerships and maintain existing ones with middle and high schools and after school/mentoring programs statewide, all with the goal of promoting and supporting their participation in the TTF initiative. IEI’s ReCONNECT NC initiative explores the root causes of disconnection in the state and highlights themes of reconnection to improve social, economic and health outcomes. The VISTA will support the recruitment, selection, and training of cohorts of North Carolina communities working to improve outcomes for low-income residents.
