Service Year NC VISTA - Reidsville Area Foundation

The Reidsville Area Foundation serves Reidsville and Rockingham County by providing support and resources to communities and nonprofits working on issues related to health, education and community development. We are guided by a vision of a thriving county, with opportunities for all residents to live healthy, productive lives. Located in the rural Piedmont, our county is home to many rivers, lakes, hiking and cycling trails, state parks and historical landmarks. The goal of this project is to build the capacity of residents of ParkView Village, a public housing authority, to build, formalize, and operate resident-led programs and peer support mechanisms. The VISTA project will support RAF’s anti-poverty work that focuses on creating a local culture wherein individuals from low-income communities are engaged, respected, and supported in building their own problem-solving capacity. We will focus directly on community efforts to create a model for multi-generational, transformative family support. The work of this project will be led by the very community who will be most impacted by it. The work starts with a central belief that the success of children and the strength of the community are deeply connected. We felt that the needs of the child and needs of the community must be addressed together to break the cycle of generational poverty and create pathways to self-sufficiency and success.

Member Duties : The VISTA will focus on supporting residents to develop community-based supports around financial literacy, workforce development, and health and wellness. The VISTA in this role will provide help ParkView residents to build their community capacity to develop and implement new resident-led services, as well as support resident and community efforts to expand existing peer support networks and initiatives. The ideal candidate will be someone who has direct experience of living within a public housing community as well as some experience of community development. The role will provide opportunities for innovative thinking, support for professional development, and hands-on experience in the philanthropic sector.
