Raising A Reader and Catholic Charities (UWBB)

Raising A Reader Aspen to Parachute (RAR) and Catholic Charities serve a region in the mountains of Colorado which includes the ski slopes of Aspen and an abundance of high-adventure activities including whitewater rafting, mountain biking, fly fishing, and backcountry hiking and camping. But don’t think you’ll be too isolated. With Aspen nearby, our communities offer cultural activities and access to the arts typically found only in urban areas. There are challenges also. Wages for local service jobs, construction trades and in the nearby oil and gas fields often don’t provide enough family income. Consequently, the region has a large non-profit, human services community. Raising A Reader programs help families build everyday engagement practices at home to prepare children for reading success in school by: 1) providing a book bag and four books every week to 1,800 children, ages newborn to six; and 2) facilitating fifty (50) parent workshops to foster book sharing activities and a literacy-rich learning environment at home. At Catholic Charities, you’ll support a mission to serve the poor and most vulnerable populations in the region. Catholic Charities provides financial assistance, case management and community integration services to individuals and families to help them meet their basic needs, be empowered to fully participate in the community and work toward self-sufficiency. The VISTA will develop a public relations/media/marketing plan including PSAs, community presentations, newspaper articles, digital newsletters, social media and video content. The goal is to communicate effectively with parents, community partners and the public to improve engagement in, support for and awareness of programs at both organizations. This VISTA opportunity is part of a community-wide effort to recruit 12 VISTA members. Each VISTA will receive a $200/month housing stipend (paid directly to VISTA members’ landlords).
