Strong City/IRC Baltimore: Economic Empowerment
 
 
 
The global mission of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is to respond to the world's worst humanitarian crises and to help people survive and rebuild their lives. In Baltimore, the IRC resettles newly arrived refugees and provides them with the opportunities and resources they need to succeed in their new community. The Economic Empowerment Program at the IRC in Maryland helps refugees and other qualified immigrants find first jobs and acquire basic financial literacy, then to find job upgrades along a career path and gain knowledge of and access to financial tools. The Youth & Women’s Employability Program is embedded in the Economic Empowerment Program and focuses on developing these resources for women and youth age 17-24, two groups frequently economically disadvantaged. This position is sponsored by Strong City Baltimore in Baltimore, MD, and the VISTA member will serve with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Baltimore, MD. Strong City sponsors 30 VISTA projects at nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, Strong City's mission is to build and strengthen neighborhoods and people. Strong City will provide support to the IRC and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, resources, and professional development opportunities.

Member Duties : The VISTA will promote the economic independence of newly arrived refugees by building employment and financial resources.Specifically, the VISTA will: 1) Develop childcare resources and networks to serve refugee parents. Train IRC staff to access developed resources and networks. 2) Research career paths accessible to refugees in the Baltimore area. Build a library of Career Path Documents to be accessed by IRC Employment staff and clients for years to come. 3) Improve financial literacy and financial access by updating IRC financial literacy materials and supporting financial literacy programming including trainings and opening bank accounts.
