Strong City/The Baltimore Station: Nutrition Program VISTA

This position is sponsored by Strong City Baltimore in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve with The Baltimore Station in Baltimore, MD. Strong City sponsors 20 VISTA projects at nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, Strong City's mission is to build and strengthen neighborhoods and people. Strong City will provide support to The Baltimore Station and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, resources, and professional development opportunities, and meetings. The Baltimore Station is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1989, starting with 40 residential beds, that provides rigorous self-help programs to men, primarily veterans, in Baltimore City who are transitioning from the cycle of poverty, substance abuse and homelessness to self-sufficiency. Today, The Baltimore Station has 140 residential beds shared between 2 treatment facilities and transitional housing. In 2015, 332 men were served by The Baltimore Station. Residents can currently stay up to 2 years, and in certain cases that time can be extended. The current average length of stay is 13 months. This longer timeframe allows the residents to learn and practice new skills and behaviors as part of addressing substance abuse challenges. The length of time that residents stay at The Baltimore Station is key to the success of the residents once they leave the program. Services are provided within a residential, therapeutic community and include counseling, group therapy and referrals to educational, employment training and other opportunities. This VISTA project would address the nutritional needs of the residents of The Baltimore Station. Often times while individuals are dealing with addiction, principles of nutrition are forgotten.
