Laurel Plays

LAUREL PLAYS is a comprehensive development program that provides its participants with job training, leadership skills, and an appreciation for higher education through a strategy of service in the City of Laurel's Parks & Recreation Department. The program aims to 1) reduce obesity in community youth and give them a healthy future through recreation that is ample and close to home and 2) to teach environmental stewardship to its members through specific projects that conserve, protect and improve the City Beautiful. Members will be trained as coaches, referees and life guards, according to their preference, in order to leverage community volunteers to help establish a city softball program, reestablish the community basketball and baseball programs, teach swim lessons and provide summer pool programming. They will serve at four community centers and ball fields within the city limits of Laurel. Some members will also be trained in landscaping and tool handling and will treat 130 acres of the I-59 corridor between Chantilly and Hwy 11. Members will leave the program with a current resume, appreciation of citizenship in the community, an understanding of personal finances, and interview skills. While charging time to the AmeriCorps program, accumulating service or training hours, or otherwise performing activities supported by the AmeriCorps program or CNCS, staff and members may not engage in certain activities. These activities will be listed in the member contract.
