OSMRE VISTA: Community Outreach for Clean Water Conservation

Freshwater ecosystems (rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands) provide a critical foundation for the social and economic well-being of a community by providing clean water, a buffer from flood damage, habitat for wildlife, and opportunities for recreation. The communities along the Harpeth River in middle Tennessee are among the fastest growing in the nation. This explosive growth will result in increased pressure on freshwater resources in the form of pollution, water withdrawals, and deforestation throughout the region, with potential consequences for both human and ecosystem health. Harpeth Conservancy is a science-based conservation organization dedicated to protecting clean water and rivers in Tennessee. This VISTA project will work to increase community involvement in and support of Harpeth Conservancy’s efforts through education/outreach events, encouraging public participation in citizen science projects, and building and strengthening relationships with other local environmental organizations. Harpeth Conservancy has three major programs: Water Quality & Sustainability, Watershed Science & Restoration, and Outreach & Education. The VISTA will contribute to all programs in some capacity, with an emphasis on educational programming, organizing community outreach and fundraising events, building citizen science programs, and grant writing.
