The mission of The Nature Conservancy is to protect the lands and waters on which all life depends. The Field Assistant and Volunteer Coordinator position is based in Montpelier, and will support the Conservancy’s mission primarily in the northern part of the state. This person will participate in and coordinate hands-on, outdoor field work several days per week, which may include invasive plant control and mapping, trail work, boundary marking, property monitoring, and scientific research. In addition, they will play an essential role in recruiting volunteers and interns to assist with land stewardship at the Chapter’s natural areas in northern Vermont Approximately half of service will be performed both in an office setting and the other half will be outdoors in inclement weather and steep terrain. There will be some long days and several hours spent driving to field sites regularly. Some evening and weekend work will be required. Position begins September 11th, 2017 and ends August 10th, 2018. This position is Full Time: Requires 1,700 hours and serves approximately 40 hours per week for 11 months. Member will receive a living allowance of $17,850 (pre-tax), and an education award of $5,815 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of service. Member Duties : • Participate in, coordinate and periodically lead outdoor stewardship workdays with interns and volunteer groups. Serve as the Certified Herbicide Applicator on some invasive plant workdays. • Train and supervise volunteers in removing invasive, non-native plants from natural areas using mechanical and chemical methods • Maintain walking trails, signs, ledger boxes, kiosks, parking areas and property boundaries • Conduct monitoring visits to private & public conserved lands • Prepare for and follow up on stewardship workdays, including equipment and vehicle maintenance & cleaning, record keeping, and communicating with volunteers • Conduct basic GIS (Geographic Information Systems) mapping and data collection • Recruit volunteers for office activities and outdoor stewardship work and support existing and recruit new Stewardship Committees and Volunteer Preserve Stewards For complete position description: http://www.vhcb.org/americorps/menu_events/positions/
