Harvest Against Hunger Community Action Center - Pullman

A priority identified through recent community food assessment data includes the need to match access to fresh food with community food education and food systems literacy including gardening, nutrition, cooking, and food safety. The VISTA will serve to better connect local food pantries with school districts through education and food security project while expanding into non school district sites for direct education, as well as engaging school community members in food security initiatives. The VISTA will coordinate indirect education as well, including social media campaigns, general signage and displays. The project will connect projects within schools (gardens, school food pantries, and lunchrooms), as well as coordinate gleaning efforts at school gardens to distribute at local food pantries, as well as create systems for future food security work. These efforts will build the capacity of the regional hunger relief system to break the cycles of poverty and hunger in the Palouse region through working to develop food literacy of youth and adults, as well as recruiting and training core community food educators, empowering them to extend the education work of the Community Action Center to reach more, and more diverse individuals. Rotary First Harvest’s Harvest Against Hunger acts as a program incubator and catalyst, utilizing a team of AmeriCorps VISTA to build sustainable gleaning and produce recovery programs to increase fresh produce in the hunger relief system. This includes coordinating volunteer groups to glean and harvest produce, addressing issues and challenges related to supply chain management – like the transportation and distribution of gleaned produce.
