Harvest Against Hunger Vashon Food Bank

This Harvest Against Hunger project is a joint venture of the Vashon Maury Community Food Bank and the Vashon Island Growers Association (VIGA) on Vashon Island in Washington. With the vision of making locally grown fruits and vegetables more accessible to low-income islanders, our project is a collaborative community effort to address hunger and its consequences on Vashon Island through community education and community organization. The focus of this position is capacity building towards sustainable systems that improve access to fresh food grown in our community for Vashon Islanders experiencing food insecurity. Encouraging fresh produce donations, gleaning, and processing are the core of this project, while education, relationship management, and sustainability planning are the legs that it stands on. The VISTA member will collaborate with a wide group of community partners and volunteers for a sustainable project. Experience will be gained in community organizing and nonprofit project management. Individuals interested in living in a small town whose culture is centered around the health of the many small farms that inhabit it, as well as meaningful community interaction, will thrive in this position. http://www.vigavashon.org http://www.vashonfoodbank.org Rotary First Harvest’s program, Harvest Against Hunger, acts as a program incubator and catalyst, utilizing a team of AmeriCorps VISTA who build sustainable gleaning and produce recovery programs. This includes coordinating volunteer groups to glean and harvest produce, and addressing issues and challenges related to supply chain management – like the transportation and distribution of gleaned produce. It also aims to involve the larger community in addressing food insecurity through encouraging individuals and farmers to intentionally plant in order to donate. www.firstharvest.org
