LCCT: PelotonU High School Recruitment Coordinator

Today’s college student is dramatically different than a generation ago - over half are older than 24, attending part-time, or commuting to school - but college hasn’t changed with them, which means a degree remains out-of-reach for most minority and nontraditional students. These students, the very ones who would benefit most from college, aren’t finishing and incremental interventions haven’t meaningfully improved outcomes. These students need a new college pathway, one built for their context and breaking down current barriers. So, that’s what we built. We’re not a college, but a team of dedicated educators who add in-person coaching and support to high-quality online programs. High-quality online programs are non-profit, regionally-accredited, affordable and competency-based. In-person support means students study at an office alongside peers, meet with a coach each week, and set weekly deadlines that fit around their full lives. When paired together, these two strategies are a complete and effective solution for working students. Thus far, we’ve seen 82% of our students persisting towards graduation, a rate five times the Austin average. Our approach isn’t encumbered by existing assumptions or bureaucracy. We’re good at identifying entrepreneurs, equipping them with the needed resources, learning as we go, and building dynamic communities to provide ongoing support. We believe a college degree is one of the few remaining paths to the middle class. We’re building a model in Austin that’s already being replicated across the country, and we’re looking for folks who want to have a hand in proving a new model of college education for the students who need it most.

Member Duties : This role will be responsible for developing a strategy to recruit graduating high school seniors to enroll in our program. We’ve historically focused on working adults, and this is a key long-term strategy to support students most likely to drop out in their first year of college. S/he will 1) identify target high schools and specific programs on each campus to recruit from 2) create a strategy for how to recruit high school seniors directly. In this role, the VISTA member will work to build the strategy and begin nurturing relationships with key stakeholders to implement the recruitment process. Most important, we’re a small team. The VISTA member will learn every facet of the organization, learn about fundraising, operations, strategy, and student support frameworks and contribute in weekly staff meetings as we build the foundation to significantly grow enrollment.
