Explore Austin - LCCT

Explore Austin teams low-income youth (Explorers) living in low-income neighborhoods with adult Mentors for a six-year journey, using the outdoors as a classroom to teach youth leadership. Explore Austin believes that through the support of a dedicated mentor and exposure to profound outdoor adventure, adolescents are provided with the conditions they need to develop life skills, such as grit and self-efficacy. Youth enter Explore Austin as sixth graders and become a part of a 20-member team: 5 Mentors and 15 Explorers. In 2017, we are tracking to serve 270 at-risk youth, who represent some of the most underserved areas of Austin, and 90 Mentors. Our program is delivered via two main activities: Saturday Challenges and Summer Wilderness Trips. Saturday Challenges: Nine, 6-hour outings each year connect Explorers to local outdoor activities and learning experiences. Explorers learn to canoe, rock climb, mountaineer, mountain bike, and backpack in addition to discussing social and emotional development topics with Mentors. Summer Wilderness Trips: Each year Explorers and Mentors embark on challenging weeklong adventures in the backcountries of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Colorado. Shared challenges fortify bonds and trust, while Mentors translate the ever present teachable moments of the outdoors into life lessons such as success and failure, teamwork and self-sufficiency, goal setting and problem-solving – all important characteristics for navigating not only the landscape of the outdoors but also the uneven and unpredictable terrain of life. Unlike other mentor programs that last for two years maximum, Explore Austin serves youth for six years. Although a six-year commitment can seem unattainable, Explorers and Mentors have demonstrated their dedication through high retention rates over the past 10 years. In 2016, 88% of our Explorers stayed active in our program and 91% of our Mentors continued their commitments to Explore Austin.
