2017-18 Volunteer Iowa: iJAG Employer & Community Engagement

The iJAG Employer and Community Engagement AmeriCorps VISTA member will be working closely with the Director of Strategic Advancement, iJAG Program Manager, and iJAG Classroom Specialists to guide the VISTA in identifying and developing community organizations and businesses that align with student career interests and needs. The VISTA member will have some marketing responsibilities as they work to develop sustaining partners who are wanting to actively engage with iJAG students. Through partnerships students have the opportunity to build leadership skills, self-esteem, and develop strategies to address their challenges, helping them successful in graduating from high school and their future careers. Most students are not aware of what really goes on in businesses, nor are they clear about employment expectations. Through partnerships, employers and community leaders are provided an opportunity to meet their future workforce in iJAG classrooms and projects. Students also get to understand business leaders are "real people" too. The VISTA member will model for students the importance of service, and the role of VISTA. National Service is a positive outcome for iJAG students. This is an important role in that iJAG students are learning that "paying it forward" is important, particularly when you have received in the past. Each iJAG student provides 15 hours of community service annually. The VISTA will serve as a part of Volunteer Iowa's Rural Development and Opioid AmeriCorps VISTA project. Volunteer Iowa is a state agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. VISTA members with our program have the benefit of a statewide support network of staff, Commissioners, National Service Programs, fellow AmeriCorps members and a VISTA Leader. Members receive ongoing training, support, networking and professional development opportunities.
