*MTCC AmeriCorps Leader--The Flagship Program

The Flagship Program is a community-school partnership that enhances the social, academic, cultural and physical achievement of Missoula’s youth by creating opportunities that help them to succeed and grow to become healthy and productive adults. The Flagship Program provides after-school opportunities for students in eight Missoula County Public Schools in the areas of academic achievement, health and wellness, art and culture, and positive social development. Flagship is unique to Missoula and FREE of charge to all participants and families. The Flagship Program is vital for children and families in Missoula, Montana. Flagship provides a safe, school-based environment for children to be socially engaged, learn new skills and be mentored by positive adults. Children benefit in multiple ways from regularly participating in high quality out of school time programming-increasing engagement in school including improving attendance, reducing likelihood of acting out in school or participating in risky behaviors, and improving academic performance including test scores, graduation rates, and college enrollment. Over 40% of Montana communities do not have daily after-school care as an option for families. The resulting opportunity gap means many children and youth are left without the chance to participate in and gain from the benefits of high quality out of school time programming. With Flagship strategically placed in the eight Missoula County Public Schools, we are trying to lessen this gap for youth in our community
