Literacy Volunteers of Illinois - VOCAL Americorps
 
 
 
Forty-two full and part-time AmeriCorps members will leverage 600 volunteers to improve the quality of life for economically disadvantaged individuals by providing - 1.) economic and educational opportunities to low literate adults; 2.) tutoring and mentoring to incarcerated youth ; and, 3.) as a pilot project with the Sunshine Community Service Center, after-school programming for at-risk youth and social service referral for veterans and military families, in a three-county area in west central Illinois. Through the members and the volunteers they recruit, it is anticipated that 2,900 low literate economically disadvantaged individuals will be served: 2,100 adults will receive one-to-one, small group or classroom instruction in basic literacy skills, ESL, or GED preparation; 500 adults will receive job search assistance; and, 300 incarcerated youth will receive individualized academic and life skills instruction.

Member Duties : Serve as one-to-one and/or small group tutor for adults and incarcerated teens; maintain records of tutoring sessions, including materials used, lessons reviewed, progress made; recruit and/or assist in recruiting at least 15 individuals to be volunteers tutors; may conduct one-to-one and group orientations for new volunteers; may conduct basic skills and literacy assessments; may assist in matching tutors and students; may provide on-going communication and support to volunteers, i.e., organizing initial and in-service training and tutor exchanges, collecting data; may plan and implement tutor recognition activities (newsletters, awards, events); may serve as part of a tutor training team; submit monthly program updates; attend training sessions every first Friday of the month and quarterly member meetings (this will entail travel for downstate members); and, participate in Days of Service as required or requested.
