A Pathway Out of Poverty: VISTA Leader

From 2000 to 2010 western Arizona’s population grew 22%, while the number of residents living in poverty rose 55%, from 34,589 to 76,059 people, with a large percentage of children living in poverty. Western Arizona Community Alliance (WACA), a subsidiary of Western Arizona Council of Governments (WACOG), was formed to foster neighborhood revitalization, promote community and economic development, reduce poverty, and advocate for social equity for low income populations. For the last four years WACA has run an AmeriCorps VISTA program focused on helping distressed communities and families create a pathway out of poverty. The program initially recruited 3 VISTAs in Yuma County to help integrate agency services, create a social enterprise and build agency capacity and resources. During the second VISTA year, WACA added 3 VISTAs to develop health and wellness programming in Yuma, La Paz and Mohave counties. In addition, 6 VISTA Summer Associates were recruited to help deliver our utility assistance program. In these past two years WACA expanded the VISTA program to include 2 sub-sites. “Academic Success and Empowerment” works with the La Paz County school district. It engages parents in their children’s academic efforts by creating parent-driven coalitions to develop in- and out-of school interventions to improve educational performance. “La Paz County Homeless Continuum of Care” works with the Regional Center for Border Health in Parker, AZ. La Paz County is part of the broader Arizona Balance of State Continuum of Care; however, until the VISTA members began in Parker, it did not have a local continuum of care. The VISTAs bring together agencies, identify existing resources and gaps in services, and work to create a self-sustaining structure equipped to better address the need among those experiencing homelessness in La Paz County. 2 VISTAs are assigned to each sub-site. A 3rd subsite will be based in Yuma County to provide additional support to area non-profits.
