20-21 PTMSC, Volunteer Program Educator

The project, Inspiring Conservation of the Salish Sea Through Collective Action, uses the following interventions to conserve and protect the Salish Sea: 1. Education: Providing hands-on high quality K12 science education to local students in economically disadvantaged schools. 2. Exhibits: Providing meaningful informal science education through the operation, interpretation, and upkeep of our two exhibit halls. 3. Volunteers/Outreach: Providing engaging volunteer opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds, including participation in citizen science projects. Also includes outreach to the community through tabling events, beach clean-ups, and social media. The service cohort consists of four members with specific focus areas: Aquarium Educator, Citizen Science Educator, Museum Educator, and Volunteer Program Educator. All four members will implement programs that relate to the above interventions. During their term of service members will spend approximately 40% of their time in PTMSC’s exhibits providing interpretation to visitors, support for volunteers, and exhibit upkeep; 30% preparing for and providing science education programs; and 30% on position-specific projects, volunteer outreach, training, and support. The distribution of time will vary throughout the term depending on local school calendars, seasonal changes in exhibit hours, and seasonal demands of specific projects. Member projects will use place-based conservation strategies to address unmet needs in our community, including the need to raise public awareness and engagement in conservation efforts and the need to provide engaging volunteer opportunities and high-quality hands-on education to improve science and ocean literacy of students in our economically disadvantaged community.

Member Duties : In addition to shared education (30%) and exhibit (40%) duties, the Volunteer Program Educator will spend approximately 30% of total service hours supporting volunteer programs at PTMSC. This will include training and scheduling volunteers, implementing “brown bag lunch” volunteer enrichment lecture series, and managing volunteer program data. This will also include supporting citizen science volunteers in our Marine Mammal Stranding Network. MMSN tasks include monitoring the marine mammal stranding network hotline, dispatching volunteers to respond to reports of marine mammal strandings, training new volunteer responders, communicating with current volunteers working off site, assisting with disposal or collection of deceased marine mammals, managing program data, organizing response supplies and maintaining stranding program supplies and equipment.
