DOI VISTA Sequoia and Kings Canyon

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are bordered by Tulare and Fresno counties, two of the poorest counties in California. A high percentage of families with children under the age of 18 are living below the poverty line. 71% of the students enrolled in local schools qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Agriculture is the dominant industry in the local economy, and many of the parents work in this industry. The population is culturally and economically diverse. There is a substantial Latino presence throughout both counties, with approximately 72% of students identifying as Hispanic or Latino. Unemployment is high, and the unemployment problem in the agricultural industry is being exacerbated by the drought conditions currently prevailing for the third year in a row in California. Students who complete the entire Natural Resources Science Pathway program being developed through this project will graduate from a two-year college program with an Associate’s Degree in a resource management field and will be fully prepared for well-paying careers on public lands or in the private sector. Students who complete the high school portion of the program and the summer volunteer service components will have acquired significant hard and soft skills for workplace success in a variety of settings. This preparation will equip students for better-paying jobs than those currently available to them in the region’s agricultural sector and will consequently help lift entire families and communities out of poverty.

Member Duties : The VISTA will work in a Natural Resources Science Career Pathway program for local high school students in partnership with one high school in Visalia, California, a local community college, the county office of education, school district, and two non-profit youth-serving community organizations. Participating students will enroll in elective high school and college (dual-credit/dual-enrollment) courses in forestry and natural resources management fields. One of the core responsibilities of the VISTA for this project is to develop and nurture an advisory council that has representation from the community and families of students participating in the Natural Resource Science Pathway. The role of this advisory council is to consult in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the project. The VISTA also works to develop several community science volunteer projects and special events to encourage the community to visit their national parks.
