Immigrant Employment Network Coordinator

The AAFE Immigrant Youth Employment Program is a 2-member neighborhood and school-based, AmeriCorps VISTA project that builds school-family-community capacity with local businesses that serve in Flushing, Queens, one of New York City's most diverse neighborhoods. The target population for our Immigrant Youth Employment Program is the student body at three Queens-based high schools, Flushing International High School, Flushing High School, and Queens High School for Language Studies. The minority enrollment is 97% of the student body (majority Hispanic), which is more than the state average of 54%. Flushing High School operates within the New York City Geographic #25 School District. New York City Geographic #25 School District's 68% graduation rate is lower than the NY state average of 87%. To increase economic opportunities for immigrant youth in addition to college readiness, a VISTA member will have the opportunity to work closely with Asian Americans for Equality as the Immigrant Youth Leadership and Employment Coordinator. The Coordinator will research, design, and pilot a new program using best practices and a tested curriculum developed by VISTA members over the past 2 years. In addition, the project aims to increase broad awareness of the issues facing immigrant youth in Flushing to attract volunteers to support as mentors, donors, and advocates for these students.
