MTCC -Helena College: Building Community-Based Learning

Helena College University of Montana, a comprehensive two-year college, provides access to and support of lifelong educational opportunities to our diverse community. Montana ranks 8th lowest in the nation for college graduation rates, with less than half of all college students graduating within six years. Research demonstrates that service learning and community engagement are high impact practices within higher education that result in greater student success and ultimately graduation from college/university thereby increasing earning capacity of students and moving them out of poverty. 57% of the Helena College student body receive Pell grants and 27.2% of high school students receive Free and Reduced Lunch. The service-learning program will help engage low-income students (the majority of students) in service-learning opportunities. The College 5 Year Average Fall to Fall Retention Rate is 53% and the 5 Year Average Graduation Rate (within 3 years of entering) is 26%. Research demonstrates that service learning and community engagement are high impact practices within higher education that result in greater student success and ultimately graduation from college/university thereby increasing earning capacity of students and moving them out of poverty.
