Miles Community College (MCC) is a comprehensive community college founded in 1939 in Miles City. MCC offers 38 degree programs as well as workforce training opportunities in CDL and CNA. MCC participates in the NJCAA and NIRA for varsity athletics. On-campus housing, student government, and other student activities are available for MCC students. Montana ranks 8th lowest in the nation for college graduation rates, with less than half of all college students graduating within six years. Research demonstrates that service learning and community engagement are high impact practices within higher education that result in greater student success and ultimately graduation from college/university thereby increasing earning capacity of students and moving them out of poverty. Roughly 19.7% of Custer County residents age 25+ have their bachelor’s degree or higher and 12.8% of Custer County’s population is in poverty. The goal in MCC’s Vision 2020 strategic planning document is to have a completion rate of 48% and a retention rate of 68%. Research demonstrates that service learning and community engagement are high impact practices within higher education that result in greater student success and ultimately graduation from college/university thereby increasing earning capacity of students and moving them out of poverty.
