NeighborWorks VISTA, AAFE - Youth Leadership & Empolyment
 
 
 
To increase economic opportunities for immigrant youth in addition to college readiness, a VISTA member will have the opportunity to work closely with Asian Americans for Equality as the Immigrant Youth Leadership and Employment Coordinator. The Coordinator will research, design, and pilot a new program using best practices and a tested curriculum developed by VISTA members over the past 2 years. In addition, the project aims to increase broad awareness of the issues facing immigrant youth in Flushing to attract volunteers to support as mentors, donors, and advocates for these students.

Member Duties : The VISTA duties include: a) Research and create a database of examples of youth employment programs across city, state, and nationally; b) Pilot AAFE's first afterschool/summer youth employment program; c) Host three events with community organizations that inspire youth to plan their future college and career paths; d) Create ways to sustain and grow the program through partnerships, fundraising grants, local businesses, and corporate partners. The VISTA will be responsible for talking with school staff, students, and families about the importance of including youth employment opportunities alongside college readiness, educating parents about the program, creating materials to promote the program, working with community organizations to recruit students and inspire youth. Working with the newly launched Flushing Employment to include internships and apprenticeships that will help immigrant youth get entry-level skills for their first job.
