FIT Hollows Community Garden Summer Associate VISTA

Families in Transition (FIT) is an entrepreneurial, forward thinking, nonprofit organization that provides safe, affordable housing and supportive services to individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, enabling them to gain self-sufficiency and respect. With nearly 100 staff, 20 properties (and growing), and 235 housing units, FIT provides an array of housing options including emergency-short term shelter housing, to transitional housing to permanent housing in Manchester, Concord, Dover, and possibly, Wolfeboro, NH. The need for the type of housing and services that Families in Transition offers is growing. We typically receive over 5,000 requests for assistance and we are only able to help about 600 of them, and typically half are children. FIT’s Hollows Community Garden and Learning Center is designed to improve the quality of life and help homeless individuals break the cycle of homelessness by delivering immediate hunger relief and providing educational experiences that develop the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to cultivate self-sufficiency and lifelong healthy behaviors. This project will reduce this area’s high level of food insecurity, provide critical education and resources for sustainable food access, and aid in the transition from homelessness.
