FRN Program Research & Outreach VISTA
 
 
 
Food Recovery Network unites students on college campuses to fight waste and feed people by donating the surplus unsold food from their colleges and donating it to hungry Americans. Founded in 2011, FRN is the largest student movement against food waste and hunger. FRN has grown to include chapters at 230+ colleges and universities in 44 states and DC that have recovered over 2 million pounds of food. Each chapter works with on-campus dining halls and off-campus eateries to divert food from landfills to community members in need, while also raising awareness and inspiring action on issues of food waste and hunger in America.

Member Duties : Year two of the Research & Outreach VISTA will build upon the foundation laid in year one: a research model and newly created resources to adapt to other communities in other states where FRN is not currently located or currently has minimal reach. FRN used Delaware as a case study in the first year. The VISTA completed an analysis of higher eductation in the state and worked with students at the University of Delaware to create the beginning of an outreach guide with the goal of connecting with two new schools in Delaware. Through various projects, we identified two categories of outreach: regional and demographic. This VISTA will focus research and outreach on four specific regions to support FRN’s larger goal of increasing its impact to feed more food-insecure individuals and families while also reducing unnecessary food waste.
