Citizen Schools CA - Development VISTA

Citizen Schools is a Boston-based, national nonprofit organization that partners with public middle schools to re-imagine the learning day for children in low-income communities. At Citizen Schools, adolescents work side by side with experts to explore new fields, learn new skills, & build a foundation for their future. We partner with low-income communities that need additional support & resources & mobilize a team of AmeriCorps educators & volunteer professionals we call “Citizen Teachers” to teach apprenticeships, & provide academic support, in order to help all students discover & achieve their dreams. Citizen Schools works to close the opportunity & achievement gaps by engaging students in real world learning, effectively setting students’ sights on high school graduation & post-secondary matriculation, while building the 21st century skills, beliefs, & networks they will need to thrive in the modern economy. We have developed deep volunteer partnerships with many companies including Biogen, Cisco, Dell, Fidelity & Google that provide our students with inspiring mentors & hands-on learning opportunities across the country. Since our inception in 1995, Citizen Schools has developed a strong track record of results. Citizen Schools' students significantly outperform their peers on leading indicators of educational success & advancement, including attendance, grades, & on-time graduation from high school. Citizen Schools currently partners with 3o schools in six states, providing an additional 350+ hours annually of intensive academic & enrichment learning opportunities to nearly 5,000 students.
