NeighborWorks VISTA, Origin SC - Technology & Design

Individuals who enter Origin's financial education program will emerge with a better understanding of credit, a budget, knowledge about banking options, and a better understanding of student loan repayment options available. We want to see more households who are able to purchase homes, afford a larger down payment, and pay a lower mortgage interest rate. Those households should be able to put more into retirement and have a more financially secure future. In addition to fixing an ever growing problem, we also strive to prevent student loan default with education. Providing practical and applicable knowledge of money management to teens and young adults, as well as information on student loan repayment and default, lays a foundation of default prevention. First time homebuyers usually need education and coaching to help them navigate the myriad of issues involved in finding a suitable home and mortgage that they can afford, and all studies and examples of successful neighborhoods in our communities reinforce the fact that owner-occupied homes reduce crime and blight and homeownership increases financial stability. Origin SC provides group education workshops as well as individual one-on-one coaching with a certified homebuyer coach that help low- to moderate-income buyers achieve the dream of homeownership. The overall impact of the VISTA projects is priceless. Individuals and families without prior financial education are more likely to have a positive outcome, which impacts their communities. Those given proper financial guidance are able to have more disposable income to spend in the community, they are encouraged to set up emergency funds, and, overall, they live more financially stable lives.
