Collaborative WVU Extension Service CRED

The Community Leadership Academy offers education and networking to public officials and other local leaders in West Virginia and beyond. What began as a small, topic-focused training has become a premiere conference for participants to identify and build on their community’s assets. The CLA has grown from 60 members to 250 in just five years and allows participants to take advantage of the current development through partnerships and programmatic expansion. The program is developed and delivered by the West Virginia University Extension Service in partnership with the West Virginia Association of Counties, the West Virginia County Commissioners Association, Leadership West Virginia and the West Virginia Community Development Hub. The planning committee is well represented that includes those entities as well as faculty members from other WVU schools, such as the Department of Public Administration and Department of Public Health. The CLA also has an Advisory Council that is represented by individuals from statewide organizations. The Community Leadership Academy (CLA) helps community officials, volunteers and business leaders identify and build on their community’s assets to take advantage of the current development opportunities facing West Virginia and the region. It provides them with a solid foundation in public organizational and financial management. Topics emphasize enhancing personal leadership skills and providing an understanding of current, complex issues affecting communities.
