*Goodwill VISTA* Emmaus Homeless Shelter, Ellsworth
 
 
 
The Emmaus Homeless Shelter is a 25 bed facility which can accommodate four families, six single women, and five single men, ages 18 and up. The Emmaus Shelter opened its doors to its first guests of February 25, 1992. The Shelter operates (24) twenty four hours a day, 365 days a year. The Shelter exists to provide a safe and comfortable environment for homeless men, women and families in need of temporary shelter who are willing to work towards ending their homelessness. We are committed to helping the poor in our local communities by offering a wide range of services and referrals to anyone in need. Our services include a food pantry, free clothing room, free linens and houseware items, and furniture. Below is a partial listing of the services we provided in 2016 not only for the homeless but also to the less fortunate in Hancock County. • The shelter housed and fed 95 women, men, and children totaling 6,780 bed nights • Helped 14,670 individuals with emergency food boxes and produce • Supplied 93 households with linens & blankets, household goods & furniture • 452 people visited our clothing room and left with a bagful of wonderful clothing • 79 households received financial assistance • 140 families received Thanksgiving food boxes, consisting of a turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, vegetables, fruit, nuts, and pie • Food boxes were also given to 174 households at Christmas time • 420 children woke up Christmas morning to wonderful presents under the tree

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps VISTA Member will recruit and coordinate volunteers to help with our many services and programs. We are in need of volunteers to transport residents, babysit residents’ children, help with food distribution, organize our clothing, linen, and household rooms, holiday programs, and fundraising events. The member will develop a volunteer database to collectively store volunteer information for staff and program access. The member will write grants to procure operational funding in order for the shelter to continue to help the homeless and poor in our community. They will also assist with our fundraising events including our Annual Summer Auction, Toys for Kids and Adopt-A-Family during the holiday season.
