Tribal VISTA: Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria
Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria is located on the Northern coast of California. The tribe’s enrollment is around 590, around 150 live on the Rancheria. In a 2015 survey initiated by the tribal social services department, it was found that 40 percent of tribal respondents were unemployed and 42 percent had trouble paying bills. Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria seeks to further environmental resilience efforts on the Rancheria and ancestral lands through investment in renewable energy, carbon sequestration methods, preparing for natural disasters, and building food security through native foods and other plant species. Similarly, environmental changes that the VISTA volunteer will be assigned to help address are: food security, increased storm events, the need for carbon reduction, and the effects of warming rivers on culturally significant fish. The cultural resources department has received a grant to fund native foods, and the volunteer will work with the department in order to help build food security. For the other portions of the work plan, the volunteer will be working within the Environmental and Natural Resources Department. Reviewing applications on a rolling basis, apply today!

Member Duties : The VISTA will develop community partnerships, connections to resources, and create guides and frameworks for the tribe’s future use. These projects will empower the community by creating opportunities for tribal members to increase their cultural, economic, and environmental resilience. The Vista will pursue partnerships that help protect local fish that are impacted from elevated water temperatures. The VISTA will create skill-building guides to help the community learn to grow their own produce. The guidebook for gardening will create less dependence on grocery items and instead will help tribal members reduce their spending by sourcing food from their yard. The business guidance will serve the purpose of outlining steps tribal members can take to make profits from produce as well as connect them to further resources. The VISTA will also establish a community based emergency response group and create guidelines for program continuity.
