Citizens Schools HQ - Civic Engagement Operations VISTA

Citizen Schools is a national nonprofit organization that partners with middle schools to expand the learning day for children in low-income communities. Citizen Schools mobilizes a team of AmeriCorps educators and volunteer professionals to teach real-world learning projects and provide academic support in order to help all students discover and achieve their dreams. Our vision is to close the opportunity and achievement gaps by expanding the learning day and engaging students in real-world learning, ensuring that all children graduate high school ready to succeed in college and careers. Citizen Schools works with students at a critical turning point in their educational trajectory. By focusing on middle school, we capitalize on this critical development period and inflection point, effectively setting students’ sights on high school graduation and college matriculation while building the skills, beliefs, and networks they will need to reach those goals. Since our inception in 1995, Citizen Schools has developed a strong track record of results. A series of rigorous independent evaluations has reported that Citizen Schools’ students significantly outperform their peers on leading indicators of educational success and advancement, including attendance, grades, and on-time graduation from high school. Internal evaluations have also shown that Citizen Schools’ alumni outperform their peers in college enrollment and persistence. Citizen Schools currently partners with 30 schools in six states, providing an additional 350+ hours annual of intensive academic and enrichment learning opportunities to approximately 5,000 students. We have developed deep volunteer partnerships with many companies, including Bank of America, Fidelity, Cisco, and Google, that provide our students with inspiring mentors and hands-on learning opportunities across the country.
