About Newark Community Schools Newark Community Schools (NCS) mission is to break the cycle of poverty in Newark, NJ by transforming local schools into full service community centers that help students and their families succeed. NCS currently operates in five schools in Newark’s South ward and is supported by educators, staff, and volunteers from the Newark School District, the Newark Mayor’s Office, Rutgers University, nonprofit service providers. To ensure progress is made towards its mission, NCS is improving its management, communication, and resource mobilization infrastructure. This is a New Jersey Campus Compact Statewide Collective Impact AmeriCorps VISTA Project. With our college and university partners, New Jersey Campus Compact is building a cohort of AmeriCorps VISTA members to support the anti-poverty work of 14 large-scale, cross-sector organizations focused on increasing education, economic opportunity, and healthy futures in NJ’s underserved urban areas. We seek a qualified, civic-minded individual to be the AmeriCorps VISTA serving at the Newark Community Schools.

Member Duties : AmeriCorps VISTA Duties As a New Jersey Campus Compact VISTA based at Newark Mayor’s office, you will be a vital team member serving with NCS senior staff, faculty, nonprofits, educators, and volunteers to build NCS’ education and health programs. In this role, you will research, develop, coordinate, and help implement: 1. A city-wide Public Relations Campaign for NCS to raise community awareness and use of NCS services 2. New capacity building resources from Rutgers University and other nonprofit service providers 3. A sustainability plan for the initiative 4. A system of communication and integration for The Mayor’s Children Cabinet 5. Recruit and train student volunteers and develop volunteer communications system
