Backside Learning Center Sustainability Project

The Backside Learning Center’s VISTA position will lay the groundwork for overall organizational sustainability, and will raise the profile of the organization within both the horseracing industry and the community at-large, resulting in a more consistent stream of revenue, as well as new and talented volunteers and Board members. Through extensive research, community outreach, and ultimately a comprehensive development plan, the position will aim to garner support for a largely invisible but significant population, made up primarily of immigrants, dedicated to an industry which is so vital to the economy of our city and state. BLC programming will continue to expand and strengthen, providing much-needed educational support to both adults and children. As the majority of backside workers have limited formal education and lack a functional understanding of the English language, they are unable to move into higher-paying positions, either within or outside of the industry. The project will seek to expand educational support for adults, while building and strengthening a new family education program which is working to eliminate generational poverty through academic and other support to the children of equine workers.
