LCCT: VISTA Client Volunteer Prog. Coord. @ Sharing Life

Sharing Life Community Outreach (SLCO) was founded in 1999 as a small food pantry and staffed by one woman. In 2016, the agency became the first pilot HUB for the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB). We serve over 100 families on-site daily and distribute to smaller food pantries that have impacted almost 8,000 clients since June of 2016 in our service area of 31 zip codes. In addition to offering a client choice food pantry, SLCO provides clothing, furniture, durable medical equipment, financial capability training, emergency utility assistance, a summer feeding program, back to school program, a senior citizen holiday gathering, People and Nutrition (PAN) supplemental food assistance program for senior citizens, extra holiday food and an annual Christmas Faire that provided toys to over 1200 children in 2016. Our partnerships are many and strong. For example, we partner with El Centro Community College to provide 5 healthcare pathway classes to our clients who apply and are accepted. In 2017, we became a VITA site for the Internal Revenue Service in order to provide no-cost income tax filing assistance. The NTFB provides our clients the ability to apply for food stamps. The incidence of high school student homelessness is growing in our area and we partner with our local school district by providing food for students who are experiencing homelessness. Dallas County provides utility assistance in addition to our own, and a representative is on-site weekly to assist clients. SLCO maintains a staff of 14 paid employees and approximately 250 volunteers. Daily operations require at least 25 volunteers, and our goal is to increase participation, surpassing that minimum. Volunteers are used in all aspects of the agency, and there are several who have been volunteering within our organization since its inception. As is the case with most non-profits, recruiting and retaining volunteers is of paramount importance to the agency overall.

Member Duties : Our VISTA will develop, implement and manage a volunteer program that includes clients who wish to also serve as volunteers. Through research, study of current best practices, discussions with other agencies with like programs and with our own regular volunteers and clients who wish to participate, our VISTA will build a program that will benefit not only SLCO by bringing on more volunteers but also benefit clients who have the desire and motivation to serve others. Sharing Life has permitted clients to serve as volunteers on occasion in the past, but has not experienced success as of yet. It is our belief that developing a robust, structured and expectation-filled program for all volunteers will prove to be the ticket to success for this endeavor. The VISTA will develop application qualifications, standards of conduct, length of service requirements, job descriptions and performance measures. Outcome measures will also be established to determine the efficacy of the program.
