AVID Tutor, Tacoma Public Schools

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a system of support for students, deployed at eleven middle and high schools within Tacoma Public Schools, that encourages adoption of strong, independent Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading strategies that enable students to realize long-term success in rigorous courses at the high school and college level. AVID teachers teach skills and behaviors for academic success, and provide intensive support through tutorials and building string student/teacher relationships AVIDS’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. The AVID Socratic Tutorial Model is an approach to creating collaborative learning environments that support student learning through probing questions. Students prepare for the tutorial by taking Cornell notes in class, reflecting on their notes, and identifying “points of confusion.” By design, students further develop the ability to think for themselves and are thereby empowered to take responsibility for their learning. Tutorials are a critical part of the AVID system, and the context in which we feel AmeriCorps members would be incredibly impactful. This position is contingent on funding.

Member Duties : AVID-Trained tutors conduct collaborative tutorials that lead to increased student participation and success. The tutor serves as both resource and role model for AVID students, academically and collaboratively. An AVID tutor facilitates the learning process by teaching and modeling an inquiry-based process. The tutor listens; identifies and composes problems; and helps the student solve those problems by posing a series of questions. Tutors also support before or after school Collaborative Study Groups for homework help and exam prep. Tutoring may also extend beyond the school year in some cases to provide additional academic support for students. Tutors are fully supervised by an AVID elective teacher. The ideal AVID tutorial group is one adult per seven students.
