Washington County WIC Community Engagement VISTA

This position joins the Oregon Health Authority’s statewide VISTA team. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year, team retreats and meetings, and the support of the team leaders and project director based at the state public health agency. For more information about the Oregon Health Authority VISTA Partnership Program, please visit: http://go.usa.gov/cnayh The VISTA member will be a critical participant in Washington County Public Health’s vision of Healthy People, Thriving Communities. The Member will be hosted by Washington County Public Health’s Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program and will help strengthen partnerships with agencies serving low-income people, with emphasis on women, infants, and children, to increase food security and overall wellness. WIC provides certain healthy foods to supplement the dietary needs of participants to ensure good health and development. WIC also offers nutrition education, breastfeeding support and referrals to community resources. Numerous studies have shown that WIC is effective and improves birth outcomes. Nationwide, WIC participation has been declining and Washington County WIC’s caseload is down by 1000 participants. By spreading awareness of WIC services throughout the community, the VISTA will increase enrollment of eligible applicants into the program to reach full caseload and drive expansion. The VISTA Member will be located at the main offices in Washington County in downtown Hillsboro. Hillsboro is a wonderful location, full of history, rural beauty, suburban amenities, close to the beautiful Oregon coast, and gateway to wine country. Hillsboro is located in the Portland Metro area with easy accessibility to public transportation. With the innovative public health work happening in Oregon, Hillsboro is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health.
