SNACK Program Development & Outreach VISTA

This position joins the Oregon Health Authority’s statewide VISTA team. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year, team retreats and meetings, and the support of the team leaders and project director based at the state public health agency. For more information about the Oregon Health Authority VISTA Partnership Program, please visit: http://go.usa.gov/cnayh. The mission of the Student Nutrition and Activity Clinic for Kids (SNACK) Program is to facilitate behavior change towards a healthier lifestyle for overweight and obese children and their families. This VISTA project will be aimed at increasing institutional and community capacity to address the health needs of children and their families living in poverty. Increasingly, experts are linking hunger, food insecurity and other factors related to poverty with early development of obesity in children. In Yamhill County, 1 in 3 children is overweight or obese, not unlike state-level and nationwide trends. Childhood obesity increases the risk of a number of chronic illnesses (diabetes, cardiovascular disease, asthma) and psychosocial challenges (bullying, discrimination, and depression). Ultimately, reduced health and wellness at an early age often reduce an individual’s current and lifelong educational attainment and economic stability. This position is in McMinnville, Oregon, a wonderful location full of history and outdoor activities. McMinnville is centrally located in Oregon's Willamette Valley which is world renowned for its wine production. It is close to the Oregon Coast, urban life in Portland, as well as Mt. Hood! With the innovative public health work happening in Oregon, McMinnville is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health.
