Crook County Built Environment VISTA

The Crook County Health Department is committed to helping their residents eat better, move more, and live tobacco free, as part of Oregon’s innovative healthcare transformation. Collaboration among residents, community leaders, providers, and public health is necessary to make this happen. By utilizing a team approach among our employees and the community, we are achieving healthier options for the entire community we serve. By promoting a healthier lifestyle, we are encouraging our residents to take control of their lives to live longer and more productively. Crook County is a rural/frontier county in Central Oregon with a population of approximately 21,000. The county seat, Prineville, hosts over 9,000 residents with the remainder dispersed throughout the county. Here you will experience the high desert and all of its beauty in the oldest city in Central Oregon. It is an hour drive away from Bend, Oregon, a microbrewers mecca. The area also boasts plenty of things to do for skiers, snowboarders, cyclists, rafters, kayakers, rock climbers, hikers and anyone who enjoys the outdoors.

Member Duties : The Crook County Public Health AmeriCorps VISTA will collaborate with the Crook County Health Department and other city, county, and regional agencies to increase access to healthcare and nutritious foods, and promote healthy lifestyle choices among low-income residents through increased awareness of resources and opportunities. Currently in Crook County there are healthy and unhealthy food sources, but unhealthy food choices are generally closer and are more likely to be within walking distance. Additionally, there are health care facilities within Prineville, but not within walking distance for residents. By working to improve bike transportation, the VISTA project continue to help provide Crook County residents with additional transportation options that will improve access to nutritious food and health care facilities.
