This position joins the Oregon Health Authority’s statewide VISTA team. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training and professional development throughout the year, team retreats and meetings, and the support of the team leaders and project director based at the state public health agency. For more information about the Oregon Health Authority VISTA Partnership Program, please visit: http://go.usa.gov/39Vd5 This position is placed with another VISTA in Coos County Health and Wellness, a vibrant, forward-thinking organization that is looking out for the interests of our community. Its mission is to lead Coos County in disease prevention, promote healthy behaviors and healthy families, and create a community that supports healthier lives. The county population of approximately 63,043 lives in urban, rural and frontier communities, with seven cities and several smaller communities. Over the past 20 years, the health status and quality of life have declined due to economic conditions. Unemployment and poverty are among the highest in the state. There are great challenges and therefore great opportunities to make a difference in the lives of the people of Coos County. The VISTA will be one of two VISTAs serving here in North Bend, on Oregon’s beautiful southern coast. The area features the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, featuring 500-foot dunes, and with the ocean just a few miles away, the adjacent bay, and abundant coastal rivers and forests, you can enjoy outdoor activities, local arts and crafts scene, and the relaxing pace of Oregon coastal life.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will continue to coordinate the department’s application for national public health accreditation. Accreditation will support sustainable, continuing improvement of the public health infrastructure that serves otherwise underserved and low-income community members, and will consequently support long term elimination of health and economic burdens of disease and health conditions. They will work in collaboration with the WIC Coordinator, community partners and local coalitions on breastfeeding promotion campaign that will target both English and Spanish speaking WIC, Head Start, and Healthy Families Oregon participants. The VISTA will also conduct research on the social determinants of health, demographic data of Coos County and health equity concepts and use those findings to analyze factors that contribute to health inequities, ensuring that public health programs address specific populations at high risks of poor health outcomes.
