Klamath County Health Promotion VISTA

Klamath County is home to the amazing Crater Lake National Park, yet nearly 20 percent of residents live below the federal poverty line. Klamath County Public Health knows that poverty is a key factor in community wellness. The agency is pursuing two major initiatives that impact the mostly low income community members it serves. The agency is seeking national accreditation, an exciting initiative to certify public health agencies through a rigorous process that makes staff and programs re-focus to provide the best, most equitable services. The process measures a health department against nationally recognized standards to advance quality and performance. The agency is also addressing epidemic levels of communicable diseases in schools with 100% free and reduced lunch. These diseases bring burdens, costs and complications, yet are largely preventable, and cause many harmful, often irreversible, and costly clinical complications such as reproductive health problems, fetal and perinatal health problems, and cancer. The epidemic threatens lifelong health, economic, and behavioral health issues on a generation of low income youth if unaddressed. Klamath Falls is the county seat of Klamath County, located where the Cascade Mountain Range meets the Oregon high desert. There are many outdoor recreation opportunities, such as Crater Lake National Park and the Pacific Crest Trail. Klamath Falls is on the Amtrak Coast-Starlight route. The county is in the massive bird migration path of the Pacific Flyway.
